To celebrate America’s birthday (and my mom’s!) we spent our long weekend watching fireworks, shopping, and eating cake! On Thursday night we went to Kaboom Town with John and Crystal. Actually, we never made it into Kaboom Town because of the traffic, but we did watch the fireworks from the parking lot of the Hi Neighbor. Lawn chairs lined the strip of liquor stores, so we were in good company. The only regret of the evening was that we did not have any Off, so we were forced to use a old can of can of deet or be eaten by bugs. The man in the picture on the can looked like he might have enjoyed using the spray back in 1970, but those of us in 2008 were a little hesitant to spray ourselves.

On Friday, my mom flew up for her birthday and we continued the celebration. We went to Fair Park Fourth. The name suggests a 4th of July celebration at Fair Park and the suggestion is correct. Surprisingly, it was very enjoyable, despite the barefoot preteen boys that encroached on the edge of our blanket during the actual firework show. Josh found some parking accidentally that turned out to allow us not to have to sit in traffic at the end of the event. We’ll park there on purpose next time. We’ll also bring a picnic because Josh is still a little bitter about having spent money on unused food tickets.

Saturday my mom and I spent a long day shopping the holiday sales. We had a late lunch at PF Chang’s and then it was back for more shopping. We were so worn out when we got home that we didn’t even make dinner until about 9. After that, we made birthday cake (Italian Cream cake to be exact!). It was very delicious, but by the time it was baked, cooled, and iced it was midnight.

On Sunday Mom flew back home and Josh and I spent the day in recovery from the night before. Basically, we watched a Harry Potter marathon on tv. They showed 1-4 on cable and 5 on HBO. It worked out pretty well and I must say that if you have the stamina, watching them in a row really allows you to catch things you may have missed in the past.

Now it’s back to work! We’re counting down to our next day off!
